Pride of lions in the Masai Mara

Masai Mara National Reserve

Kenya's most famous reserve, and perhaps its most spectacular. It borders Tanzania's Serengeti and every year, between July and October, hosts the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra.

Maasai Mara means "spotted": the endless savannah is dotted with rocks, acacias and riverine forest. Besides the big predators (lion, leopard, cheetah) there are hyena, bat-eared fox and jackal, elephant and buffalo, and over 450 bird species.

The wildebeest number in the millions and move between the Serengeti and the Mara following the rains. Their Mara River crossings, with crocodiles waiting, are among nature's most famous scenes.
