Half day
Marafa Canyon (Hell's Kitchen)
Locals call it Hell's Kitchen. It's a valley that looks like a small version of the Grand Canyon, with sandstone columns up to 30 metres tall that change colour with the light.
- Duration
- Half day
- Departing from
- Watamu, Malindi
Legend says a Giriama tribe once lived at Marafa, so rich they washed in milk instead of water. The gods punished their pride and the ground collapsed — and the canyon was born.
It's beautiful at any hour but best early in the morning and at sunset, when the light turns the columns pink and orange. You walk along the rim and into the canyon with a local guide. It's often combined with the Gede ruins or Malindi.
