Tsavo West National Park
Smaller and greener than Tsavo East, Tsavo West is a volcanic landscape of hills, forest and springs, with Kilimanjaro on the horizon. It's where the legend of the man-eaters of Tsavo was born.
In the late 1800s two lions halted construction of the railway from the coast to Uganda for months — the story behind the film The Ghost and the Darkness. Today Tsavo West is one of the best places to see black rhino, protected in the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary.
At Mzima Springs millions of litres a day of water filtered through the Chyulu Hills' volcanic rock emerge so clear you can watch hippos and crocodiles. The Shetani Lava Flow is a river of black lava about 8 km long. The baobab-studded landscape is at its best after the rains.
