Tsavo East National Park

Tsavo, created in 1948, is Kenya's largest park and is split in two: Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Tsavo East is the closest to the coast — from Watamu you reach Sala Gate in about three hours.

Tsavo East covers semi-arid plains stretching more than 200 km north of the Nairobi–Mombasa road. It holds Kenya's largest elephant population, famous for dusting themselves in red earth. Tsavo's lions have shorter manes than those of the Masai Mara. Cheetah, gerenuk, oryx and Hunter's hartebeest are easier to see here than in Tsavo West.

Highlights include the Galana River with Lugard Falls and its crocodiles, Aruba Dam where animals gather to drink, and Mudanda Rock, a long outcrop that holds rainwater.
